While the New Zealand electricity network does a great job of getting you power when you need it, it can't tell you where that power has come from.

The NZECS builds on the existing system, by providing a separate, but parallel, channel for generators to provide generation certificates to consumers.
These digital certificates carry 'attributes' of generated electricity - such as what fuel is used, where the plant is, and how many carbon emissions are generated to produce it.
These 'attributes' can then be redeemed against a consumers electricity usage, so that the consumer can report on their usage as if it was sourced directly from that power station.
